Chemical vs Biological monitoring

The following excerpt gives a basic overview from a grad theses of a former DFO biologist (cf. Mandell, 1994):

We, the SWCSMH, had conducted the predictive TP modelling of the entire Shubenacadie River headwaters in addition to several other watersheds as well as the phycology of Cranberry. We had certain severe concerns re the increase in the local catchment area for Cranberry Lake which was being planned by the City of Dartmouth. We promptly notified Her Worship Gloria McCluskey as well as the Director of Engineering, Russell Fougere PEng via detailed facsimiles with scientific rationale. Since neither contacted us for an explanation, we presume they most probably did not understand us as the City of Dartmouth had no `accredited limnologists' on their staff (limnology is not civil engineering or planning).

During 2000-2001, we had also notified, several times, the Environmental Services branch of the Regional Operations at HRM about the scientific errors in the data as well as the analyses conducted by their consultants during 1999-2000. A discussion of the errors will be too extensive here, but briefly, the TP values of the engineering consultants were not analysed to the accuracy that is the `norm' in limnology; further their final conclusion of Cranberry Lake being oligotrophic-mesotrophic appears to be flawed on a scientific level!

The trophic standards applied by the engineering consultants were not international protocols, for e.g., they were not the 18-country peer-consensus OECD probability distribution diagrams; further they do not apply to shallow lakes with a significant macrophyte production (cf.
