Assaults (2006 onwards) on the rapidly recovering Russell Lake inspite of all the commitments made by regulators and political appointees!
Soil & Water Conservation Society of Metro Halifax (SWCSMH)
............ with special recognition of the Russell Lake Residents Association (RLRA) and it's predecessor and/or its affiliate, the Harbour East Friends of the Environment Society; the latter first approached us on March 21, 2005
October 28, 2007
Note: The photographs (and related info) were provided to us by local stakeholders none of whom are our formal members/associates; only a minute selection of photos are included here out of scores sent by them!
Contents:
- Photos here are mostly related to siltation events during significant construction in the watershed:
- Photograph from year-2005 (looking towards the west, Circumferential Highway)
- Photograph from year-2006, same direction as the one in year-2005, a major degradation!
- 2 photographs from early Fall of 2007, different views
- Note: Even after the lake clears up as a result of natural flushing, there is no (scientific) guarantee that the ecosystem has been restored to the recent state; this especially applies to the sensitive zoobenthos!
- Major water-quality related commitments made by various departments of the HRM as well as by appointees of the Harbour East Community Council (HECC)

Major water-quality related commitments made by various departments of the HRM as well as by appointees of the Harbour East Community Council (HECC)
- Via our science-based written submissions, we had continuously cautioned but no regulator ever paid any attention!
- Several senior Planning & Development staff of the HRM had given, what can be considered as, significant false commitments during public meetings at local schools and formal public hearings held by the Regional Council and by the Harbour East Community Council (HECC):
- The dates when these unfortunate commitments were made specifically include December 09, 2004; March 22, 2005; and May 25, 2005. There were similar instances at community meetings as well.
- The Morris/Russell Lakes PPC, a committee of the Harbour East Community Council (HECC), had also made such statements, especially during the public hearing on May 25, 2005.

We salute the Chebucto Community Net (CCN) of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada for hosting our web site, and we applaud its volunteers for their devotion in making `CCN' the best community net in the world!
