John Smol, the paleolimnologist from Queens, and I are thinking of submitting a proposal to NSERC to do some combined chemistry - paleo work in the east, specifically Nova Scotia and perhaps New Brunswick. Seems like a shortage of efforts to match chemical data and chemical trends with long-term paleo data from your area. I know that you have kept great records on what limnological data are available and who has them, particularly with respect to nutrients. We are also interested in acidification, DOC, metals and possibly oxygen. I have been in contact with Tom Clair who I know well and who I work with on other projects about Keji data and that will be no problem, and he is hunting down names as well, although I suspect will focus on federal and academics. However, I've discovered that most of my contacts in the Maritimes, particularly at the provincial level, have either retired or moved on to more fruitful (presumably higher paid) work. I've asked him to find out who replaced the 2 guys I knew in the provincial govt who looked after the labs and data collected in the good old days of acid rain work. Can you also help John and I with contacts, especially at the provincial level where lake data sets may have accrued? I wouldn't be surprised if you already had most of Nova Scotia's decent data sets yourself? We are thinking of collecting additional chemical data as well as the paleo data; so together, there might be considerable value perceived in what we are proposing to local environment people. Can you help in New Brunswick as well? Would you be willing to help us gather the information from whatever sources might be willing to assist and/or provide data? John happens to be in Halifax now on personal business, and suggested that if you are amenable, he might look you up next week. I'm cc'ing him on this email, which I believe he will get, so that he has your address to arrange something with you. Perhaps you could cc him (smolj@biology.queensu.ca) when you reply to me I'd be happy to tell you more about this Peter Dillon pdillon@trentu.ca pjdillon@muskoka.com dillonpe@ene.gov.on.ca PS did you check out my new website (www.trentu.ca/academic/wbgc)
